Moving Out Cleaning Checklist

Moving is a process, and one large part of it is cleaning your old place.

No matter if you’re moving out of an apartment or home, this cleaning checklist should make your move all the simpler.

Step 1: Pack Up Your Stuff

Before you start cleaning, make sure you have packed up at least most of your stuff into boxes. This will allow you to actually clean the floors, cupboards, and other items we will mention on this list. If you don’t have the time or energy to package your belongings, Leon Movers offers packing as part of our full-service package.

Step 2: Start with Dusting

A good cleaning rule of thumb is to work from top to bottom - including dusting - so you don’t have to reclean anything. Dust your fans, walls, cabinets, baseboards, window frames and anything else dusty in your home.

Step 3: Wipe Out - Clean Appliances

You’ll want to do a deep clean when you move out, so cleaning out your refrigerator, oven, microwave, and stove is a must. Depending on how often you cleaned before the move, this could be an easy few minutes, or a time-consuming process. Remember to have a cooler ready to transport your perishables.

Step 4: Clean the Kitchen

Next it’s time to move onto the rest of your kitchen! Wipe off the countertops, your sink, and both the inside and outside of your cabinets. We recommend using both a vacuum, and a rag and cleaning spray, so you can vacuum larger debris and wipe out - wipe off dust.

Step 5: Scrub the Bathrooms

We couldn’t write a cleaning checklist without touching on the bathrooms! This will probably be the step that takes you the longest because you will have so much to cover. Scrub the sinks, showers, bathtubs, toilets, and bathroom counters. Make sure you’re using cleaning products that disinfect as your bathrooms are the dirtiest places in your home.

Step 6: Clean the Floors

Depending on the type of flooring in your home, you may need to tackle various rooms in your home differently. Carpeted rooms need to be at least vacuumed, but if you have pets, or children, you may also want to shampoo or steam clean then. Hard flooring should be both swept and wet mopped. This should be one of your last steps so that any crumbs that fell off your countertops will be cleaned up at this time.
